Product Description

With your standard zoom, the built-in flash is usually effective to only about 13 feet, and that's when your zoom lens is set to its widest-angle setting. When you want to zoom in on the action, you'll find that the built-in flash does exactly the opposite of what you want. Its range is reduced to about 10 feet, and sometimes even less! It is even more annoying if you have a 70-300mm telephoto zoom lens. What is the sense of having the magnifying capability of 300mm but your camera's flash is only effective to about 10 feet?

When you want to use your zoom's telephoto capability indoors, requiring the built-in flash, your pictures come out dark, or even worse, not at all! Compared to your built-in flash, the zoom head of the Phoenix DZBIS-112CII (set at the tele position), allows you to shoot up to 3X further away with improved color, more natural lighting, and added depth to your pictures.

In addition to pure power, this Phoenix flash provides better looking photographs. It reduces or totally eliminates the annoying "red-eye" effect. Even when using the red-eye reduction feature of your camera (necessary because the built-in flash is too close to the lens) the flash reflects off your subject's retina directly back into the lens and often results in pictures with "red-eye".

The height advantage of the Phoenix DZBIS-112CII Flash greatly reduces or eliminates this "red-eye" effect. If your blue-eyed subjects still get "red eye", this can be totally eliminated by using the bounce/swivel feature of the flash head to "bounce" the light off a neutral-colored ceiling or wall, for professional looking portraits.

Tech Specs: Guide No.(ISO 100/Tele): 112ft at 50mm (ISO 100); Auto TTL range: 3-56ft; AF Illuminator Range: 3-26ft; Dedication: Canon TTL/E-TTL/E-TTL II; Uses readily available 4x AA Alkaline or NiMH batteries.

4 out of 5 stars Great value for your money.   January 6, 2007

I've tried this on every setting my Rebel XT digital SLR has and it always gets a well exposed picture with good white balance. You do have to set the ISO on the flash which some flashes do for you. Considering the price and the versatility of the flash, I certainly would consider it over the Canon version. It is, as described, tall and a little bulky in size but that raises the flash height which is one of its selling points.

4 out of 5 stars Good Flash for the price   February 14, 2008

It's a little bigger and bulkier than I was expecting size-wise, so it makes the camera heavier and more awkward to hold, but if you have the battery grip it makes it much easier... it works great and I love the even lighting that it gives off.

pros: great flash. swivels and tilts. great output and control. fits my gary fong cloud filter. original unit was DOA, but customer service at Phoenix sent a new one, no charge. Also, it's way cheaper than the canon flash.

cons: a little big and clunky, but hey, it's a flash.

I am using this flash on a Canon PowerShot S5 and it works well. On this camera you really have to use in on manual mode, and that seems to scare some people. Having learned photography back when everything was pretty much manual, it does not seem so bad, and in fact if you will invest the time to learn how to shoot in manual mode you will be a better photographer for it. Those that have said it is no better than the built in flash don't know how to use it or they got a bad unit. On the S5 and similar models you can quickly control the output strength of the flash (under function menu) and then shoot to your heart is content. Swivel the flash up increase the output and bounce it off the ceiling or even off the wall behind you. You can shoot across a large room and still get very well lit pictures. Is it as good as a speedlite? No. If you don't want to learn how to really use a flash buy a speedlite. If you don't mind learning a little and saving a lot buy this one.

This is my second purchase of this item. This product is a very good value for the money. It works as it should. It does not have the very best construction but Omegasatter backs their product. I have no complaints. Good tool for the tool bag.
