I purchased this flash after reading the reviews here instead of the Canon Speedlite 430EX II Flash. I am using it on a Canon EOS XS (1000D) DSLR camera and I am extremely pleased with the Vivitar flash, particularly since it cost about half of what the Speedlite cost. It produces excellent lighting for very well exposed pictures in dark settings. I was worried about how well it would function with the Canon for automatic exposure settings, but it works absolutely flawlessly and exposure is automatically calculated and executed perfectly. The built-in diffuser is excellent and the angles that the flash can lock at are perfect. What really impressed me and blew me away was when I used the flash while hand-holding the camera to capture an image of my daughter singing in a choir in a not-too-well-lit church from about 100 feet away using my 300mm zoom lens (NOT the IS lens; just the 70-300mm zoom kit lens that comes with the Canon EOS XS camera kit)--just blew me away when that image came out looking wonderfully well-lit and sharp!
The only complaint I have about the flash is that it sticks out just a bit too far in back which means it is a bit harder to put your eye up to the view finder at a comfortable angle--that is, the flash hits my forehead when I press my eye up to the eyepiece. That's my only complaint, though, and not one that prevents me from using the camera or the flash effectively, it's just not as comfortable as it could be.
